I'm asking this here because I dont' know where else to ask it and I love you guys over here.
A little history... I was a rebellious teen although very intelligent. I moved out at 18 with my boyfriend I who is now my husband) while STILL in high school and worked a fulltime job waitressing at Smokey Bones while finishing my senior year of high school.
After HS, I took some time off. About a year and a half. When I finally went back to school, I was doing great but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do so I was just going for the sake of going. Then I got pregnant with my son and that last semester I did horribly... my mind just wasn't in school at the time... I ended up really screwing up my GPA and that will take about a year to repair at this point.
I am 22 years old (will be 23 in December) and I am just now figuring out that I really want to be a doctor....Like I said before, I have the intelligence to do this, I just feel like it's a little late in the game to be just now deciding such a thing.. Most people know this while still in high school and go straight ot med school etc. but I am already almost 23 and I havn't even STARTED on the path that it would require to become a doctor.
What do you think? What would you do? I feel like everyone in my life will look at my like I'm absolutely nuts if I tell them I'm going to try to get into med school.
Do you think this is a stupid dream that I should just give up on and find something else to do? Or should I buckle down, fix my GPA, and do what is necessary to make my dream come true?Do you mom's think this is silly? I want to become a doctor and I'm just now deciding that at age 22...?
I am a 40 year old who will begin re-training to become a chef later this year. It is what I have always wanted to do and I am both scared and excited at the same time. I wish I had had the guts to do what you are doing when I was 22. Yes, you will be older than many of the other med students but that doesn't matter. If this is truly what you want to do . I have spent so many years doing various jobs that don't make me happy and while I don't regret that (everything is a learning experience after all) I can't wait to get started on what really makes me excited and looking forward to going to work every day. Go after your dream with EVERYTHING you've got. You will be a much better doctor for it as you have had to wait for it and have earned it :).Do you mom's think this is silly? I want to become a doctor and I'm just now deciding that at age 22...?
Nope, not a silly idea at all. At least you have motivation and ambition in life to do something, do what it takes to be successful and contribute to the world :-) you can always go via correspondence if you feel studying/working and taking care of your son is overwhelming.
I definitely don't think it's silly. And I think you should go for it! You will have to start with a Bachelor's degree, so even if you change your mind about becoming a doctor or realize it's too much for you to do, you can earn some type of degree! You are still young, so live your dreams! Good luckDo you mom's think this is silly? I want to become a doctor and I'm just now deciding that at age 22...?
Goodness girl! You are SO NOT crazy! :o) You're 22; you're still young! People change career paths an average of 4 times in their lives, so you've got nothing to worry about. Yeah, it'll take a bit to get back in the swing of things, but if being a doctor is truly your passion, then you must go for it. You can't live life regretting it and think about what a wonderful example you will be for your son. :o) Education is so important these days. I think you should totally go for it! Besides, the average age of people in med school is in their 30s, so if you buckle down now, you'll be one of the younger ones. :o)
Start out by taking a couple courses at a local community college to bring your GPA back up. Take the "hard science" courses, like chemistry, biology, and the like. If you're going to use financial aid, you'll need at lest 6 credits per fall and winter (some places call it spring) semester, so keep that in mind when registering. Then, once you bring your GPA back up, you can apply to a university near you and get your Bachelor's Degree. After that, it's time take the MCAT and apply to med school! Med school is a long time, so as an alternative (if you're getting burned out at this point), consider being a PA (Physician's Assistant). It's a 2 year Master's Degree program and you basically do the same stuff as a doctor (with an MD/DO degree), but it's less school and you work under a doctor. Still, it's great money and you really do much of the same stuff. Just something to think about!
Congrats and I'm glad you found what you want to do in life!
If being a dr is something you really want to do you should do it. You should not let anyone get in the way of it. It is never to late to go to school and become what you want to become. Yes, it might be tough going to school and taking care of a child but it will be worth it. You can make a better life for you and your family. Do what you feel is right not what others feel is right. Its your life you make what you want to out of it. in my opinion you should go to school and become a Dr. Whatever you choose to do good luck.Do you mom's think this is silly? I want to become a doctor and I'm just now deciding that at age 22...?
You can do it! You owe it to your self to follow your dreams and this will show your baby that you can be anything you want as long as you try. My aunt is 50 and will soon be attending nursing school to be a RN. Its never too late.
I dont think its late. You can do it. You'll be done by 30ish and so what? You will be fine.
I'd say go for it! I am 27 and just finishing my masters. I have 2 undergraduate degrees because I did not know what I wanted to do with my life...and even at 27 I still sometimes question this lol.
You are never too old to persue what you want! It takes some people some time to figure out what they want to do and there is nothing wrong with being older...it actually makes you do better in school because you have a goal and you know what you want to do! A friend of my mom's went back to become a doctor when she was 35 because she hated what she was doing and a realized her true passion. My Uncle was a business man for years and when he was in his early 40's he went back to school to become a teacher because he realized it was his passion as well...goes to show you that you are never too old to go back!
It might take a bit of work to get into medical school but it will be totally worth it and if it is something you really want...then GO FOR IT!!!
So my dad is a pilot for American Airlines. He makes WAY good money. He is about 47 and guess what he is doing during his mid life crisis!? Going back to school to be a DR! lol. He is only flying on the weekends and goes to school full time during the week. So I guess you're never too old to decide to become a DR. Haha. Good Luck! I really think you'd be good at it with your great people skills. Sometimes I think about going back to school and becoming a Fertility Specialist, but then I remember how much I HATE school. lol. =)
