What is the proper way to do a smokey eye?

I've been searching up on smokey eye techniques and there are so many- some recommend darker shades on the outer corner of the eyelid, some on the inside, some simply blending from the lash line to the brow bone.

I want to use smokey eye to define my eyes and make them look larger. what technique do i use? What is the proper way to do a smokey eye?
This is how I do my smokey eye and it is very simple, yet sophisticated. Spread a matte gray all over the lid, and put a dark black in the crease. Then line the top and bottom eye with black eyeliner pencil and smudge with a Q-tip to get that soft and smokey effect. Then curl eyelashes and apply two coats of your favorite mascara and you`re done!

These Are The Products I Use For It:

1. Matte gray Sephora single eyeshadow shade $10 at Sephora

2. Covergirl Eye Enhancers in Shimmering Onyx (Under $4 at Drugsto)

3. Rimmel Kajal eye pencil in jet black ( Under $3)

4. Glam Eyes Rimmel Mascara ($6 to $7 depending on where you

5. Revlon Eyelash Curler ($5 at Wal-Mart/Drugstore.)

Hope I helped! What is the proper way to do a smokey eye?
