My cat is too skinny?

Recently, my cat Smokey has been losing a lot of weight. He used to be a pretty healthy weight and now his ribs and hip bones are clearly visible. When you touch him there just doesn't seem to be much fat at all, he's just "skin and bones."

At first I thought he may have worms, but there are 2 other cats in the house who have shown no signs of losing weight at all, and I haven't noticed anything in the any of the litter boxes. He's not that old, about middle-aged for a cat. His eating habits aren't too abnormal, he's hungry all the time, but he's always had a giant appetite, so I don't really know if anything has changed too dramatically in that area. He doesn't seem to retain any weight when he does eat, though.

Other than that, he acts pretty healthy. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, all his other habits are normal, he doesn't have any lumps or bumps or injuries that I can see. He's just as playful and affectionate as he ever was.

I'm currently trying to convince the head of the house to let me take him to the vet, but it may be easier to convince said figure if I have a general idea of what's wrong. She doesn't seem to think it's too big a deal.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any insight on this. Of all my pets I have the strongest relationship with Smokey, and I would like to see him live for many years to come, I know he still has a while left.

Thanks!My cat is too skinny?
There are 3 main conditions that cause cats to loose weight quickly.

1. Hypothyroidism - their thyroid works too well causing the cat to loose weight. These cats usually are more active and have large appetites. They may also have a poor coat. This is found most often in middle aged to senior cats.

2. Diabetes - symptoms include weight loss, increased drinking and urination, and as time goes on they become less active and decreased appetite.

3. Kidney Disease - Symptoms include weight loss, increased drinking and urination, vomiting, and as time goes on poor appetite and lethargy.

Your kitty would benefit from a trip to the vet where they will likely run a blood panel to check for each of these illnesses. Each of these illnesses can be treated if they are caught early enough. My cat is too skinny?
Hyperthyroidism is very common as cats get older, and it will cause them to lose weight even if they eat a lot.My cat is too skinny?
If you have not taken your Cat to the Vet. I would do so as soon as you can. They can check his blood to see if he has any serious problems.
