Stray cat? What do I do?

I was outside watering my garden when i saw this fat gray/white cat across the street. I saw he had a collar but a walked over and patted the grass. He ran over to me, and I petted him. I figured out that he only looked fat because of his fur, i could feel every bone in his body. He had a rusty old collar on, and it only said where he got his shots.Either he had been abandoned, or lost for a really long time. I tried to feed him some dry cat food, but he wouldnt eat it, so i offered him some ham. He licked it then started to eat it. He teeth we stained with red blood, so i guess he hunted for food, but he was really skinny. I started calling him Smokey. I know he has a collar on, but he is so skinny!!!!!!!!! Should I take off the collar and put on a new one that says my number and Smokey on it?Stray cat? What do I do?
Check with your neighbours too, in case there's just someone new in the neighbourhood who has an older cat who goes out. Sometimes some old timers look like strays (especially hyperthyroid cats!), when they're really well loved and well cared for, but may have medical problems associated with their age that would account for the skinnyness.Stray cat? What do I do?
i have 2 stray cats , feed him/her wet can food for the 1st month then you can also mix dry cat food inside with it and make shur to come his har and take all th loose hair out unlless you want a hari house!!!! after like 6 weeks or so you can take him/her to get shoots again (too be safe) and look if it has any flees if so then you need to buy something to remove them. get a litter box and clean it daily. yeah thats all
I think first you should either call the local shelter, vet, or police station. That way, if he is truly lost, someone who is missing him can find him. If the tag has a vet number, try that first. Tell whoever you call that if no one claims him you want to take care of him and they should be perfectly fine with that.

: )

I hope that you get to keep him. Sounds like you'd take really good care of him.Stray cat? What do I do?
He could have gotten out by accident and lost. Or he could be a dumped pet someone abandoned. Call animal control and give them your name, area, date you first saw him and a description. They will check their records for calls about a lost cat of that type.

Take the cat in, get him off the streets and have him taken care of healthwise.
Take him to a vet and get him checked out, and have them see if he has a microchip. If he doesn't and you have no other way of contacting his owners, then you could keep him. If you don't want to keep him, don't give him to a shelter unless its no-kill, because if he doesn't get adopted in a short period of time, they will euthanize him.Stray cat? What do I do?
You should first take him to a vet, and make sure he is ok, and then you can keep him if you wish. But yes, if his collar is really tight, you should take it off
i just found a stray, and i took him to the vet had him fixed and brought him back to my house so i basically just adopted him.
Give him to your local SPCA or animal shelter, he will get the proper medical attetion needed and will find a nice home, or his owners will claim him.
If you are going to take on this cat, please bring him to the vet. It sounds like he really needs some medical help.
Take him to the vet just to make sure he doesnt have any visible problems. Good luck with Smokey!
Take him to the ASPCA right away! So he can get the proper needs he needs!
If he was someone's kitty that just strayed too far from home, they may be missing him terribly. A lot of kitties have microchips these days. If you take him to a local shelter, they can check to see if he has a microchip and get in touch with his human parents if he does. Otherwise, they can nurse him back to health and try to adopt him out. Some shelters will take your number and call you if they're unable to adopt the kitty in case you're able to take him in.
The right thing to do is contact the humane society or local animal shelter first and see if they have any lost cat ads that match his description. Second, take him to the vet and have them scan him for a microchip. Try putting up posters for found cat. Give a description, but don't mention the sex of the cat because there are some bad people out there that may do ungodly things to a free cat. His owners could be looking for him. Imagine if it were you and your cat got lost. How would you feel? If no one claims him or you can't find his owners, then I would say go ahead and give him a home.
